The transition from the S197 to the S550 platform, with its independent rear suspension, makes for a dramatic change in this history of the Ford Mustang. And, looking straight at the GT500 range-toppers, how about a good old "father and son" race?
Of course, the current model will leave its predecessor trailing in its wake, but the S197 we have here, which is a 2013 model, has been taken to the gym. The 5.8-liter V8 of the Blue Oval machine has been fitted with a cold air intake, a 67mm throttle body, Kooks long tube headers, a custom upper pulley, an oil catch can, along with 4.10 gears.

Now, in its 662 hp factory form, the old GT500 was the only test car that gave me the weak knees effect while going all out, but the one we have here packs 677 hp at the wheels, which makes for around 800 hp at the crank.

As for the S550, its spec includes the Magneride adaptive suspension, but not the carbon fiber-loaded Track Pack. This GT500, whose stock crank output sits at 760 hp, only features light mods such as a JLT air intake and, according to its owner, delivers 654 hp at the wheels.

And while the S550 does pack a dual-clutch advantage (the S197 comes in six-speed manual form), the first is around 350 lbs less friendly to the scales. Speaking of which, the racing action awaiting you at the 13:11 point of the video below sees a 190 lbs passenger riding in the new model, while the shenanigans taking place at the 14:28 timestamp involve the relocation of the said passenger.

PS: Yes, these rolling start adventures take place on the street and no, they shouldn't be used as an example - please head over to the track when you feel like it's time to battle.
