After Geely bought Volvo Cars in 2010, the Chinese automaker started to work its magic on the company. First came the XC90, followed by the rest of the 90 Series. Then the XC60 and XC40 arrived on the scene, joined by the all-new V60. Next up, the S60 compact executive sedan and V40 hatchback are scheduled to freshen the lineup with sharp exterior styling and the latest drivetrain and safety technologies.
In comparison to the V60, the S60 will be manufactured in the United States in a factory specialized in Scalable Product Architecture-based vehicles. And just like the station wagon, the sedan will be offered with front- and all-wheel-drive, 2.0-liter mills, and a couple of plug-in hybrid options. All in all, an honorable effort in a segment dominated by the German triad.
The V40 doesn’t have it easy either. In addition to the Audi A3, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class W177 launching at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show is a tough nut to crack. Volvo, however, isn’t trying to emulate the model set forth by the Germans, but do its own thing with Scandinavian appeal and the Compact Modular Architecture.
Imagined by Kleber Silva with the headlights, grille, and front bumper from the V60, the V40 ticks all the right boxes in the featured rendering. And for what it’s worth, the real deal won’t be too far off the designer’s vision. Mind you, Polestar Blue exterior paint would’ve fitted the hatchback even better.
Being based on the CMA, it’s not too hard to figure out what’s in the offing in the oily bits department. Like the XC40, the V40 will be offered with a six-speed manual, seven-speed dual-clutch, and eight-speed automatic transmissions. Engine choices will range from a 1.5-liter three-pot to a 2.0-liter turbo diesel. The T5 Twin Engine PHEV will be joined by a pure-electric drivetrain in 2019, which is anticipated to boast two battery options.
Volvo’s first-ever EV will go into production in 2019 at the Luqiao plant in China, a facility specialized in all things Compact Modular Architecture. And yes, there’s also a SPA-based electric vehicle in the works.
