Somewhere in the People’s Republic of China, a company called Geely tries to emulate Volvo’s formula of success with Chinese characteristics. Enter Lynk & Co, which is much obliged to showcase the 03 sedan that rides on the Common Module Architecture we know and love from the Volvo XC40.
Like the 40 Series, the Chinese automaker will offer the 03 with a selection of turbocharged three- and four-cylinder engine from the Drive-E family. With displacement ranging from 1.5 to 2.0 liters, performance won’t be anything to write home about. But on the other hand, don’t forget that Lynk & Co follows in the footsteps of Volvo when it comes to efficiency.
To this effect, the 03 will be offered with plug-in hybrid and electric options at some point in the future. The PHEV should be front-wheel drive, and with a bit of luck, the EV could be offered with single- and dual-motor options. The latter of the two electric configurations should also add to the performance credentials of the compact sedan.
Scheduled for reveal next month at the Chengdu Motor Show, the 03 shares the visual characteristics of the 02 and 01 before it. Vertical LED light strips located above the headlight clusters, chrome strips that run from the A-pillar to the C-pillar of the vehicle, boomerang-inspired taillights, the Lynk & Co script on the rear of the trunk lid, the garnishing is special enough for a vehicle of this size and in this segment of the market.
Twin-spoke alloy wheels, deep side skirts, an aerodynamic diffuser, and a pair of exhaust tips complete the picture. Hopping inside the 03, Lynk & Co went forward with rectangular-shaped air vents, touchscreen infotainment with Volvo-based software, an e-brake, and a cockpit design that’s both premium in appearance and oriented towards the driver, thus emphasizing sportiness.
If the automaker can make a case for the 03 in Europe, expect production to be handled by the Volvo plant in Ghent, Belgium. Over in its domestic market, Lynk & Co will manufacture the newcomer in Zhangjiakou, Hebei.
