Up to 89 cubic feet (2,520 liters), that’s how much cargo the bed of the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 in Long Box configuration can swallow up in one go. The Standard Box and Short Box, on the other hand, make do with 72 and 63 cubic feet, and that’s great as well when compared to half-ton workhorses from Ram and Ford.
“The bed is the heart and soul of any pickup, so we made several improvements to the bed of the all-new Silverado to give our customers an even better hauling experience,” said Tim Herrick, executive chief engineer of full-size pickup trucks at General Motors. “We’ve added so many features and benefits that it deserves its own name – Durabed.” What sort of goodies, you might be wondering?
In addition to volume, the extensive use of high-strength steel the construction of the Durabed helps with wear and tear. The bed floor materials, meanwhile, have been improved from 340 to 500 MPa. The depth (22 inches) and length (98 inches) of the cargo box is also up there with the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500, proving that the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado is an incredible improvement over the previous truck.
12 fixed tie-downs with double the strength (500 pounds of force before bending), nine moveable tie-down points available as an option for more cargo flexibility, and larger cutouts in the CornerStep bumpers add to the functionality of the Durabed. For those who are on the move most of the time, the available 110/120-volt power outlet and in-bed LED lighting are features that are worth taking into consideration.
In total, the Silverado 1500 will be available with no less than four tailgate options. The standard gate has no lift assist and it’s manually lockable with a key. Then there’s the standard gate with lift assist, power lock/release gate, and industry-exclusive power up/down gate. The most interesting and expensive of these options is available on the LTZ and standard on the High Country.
Going on sale at dealers nationwide this fall, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado starts at $29,795 for the Work Truck. At the other end of the spectrum, the High Country is $54,495.
