BMW is revving up its customer racing program by announcing this week the expansion of the services it offers to teams all across the world, but also by promising a brand new entry-level race car.
In a statement released on Monday (June 24) BMW said it is in the final stages of testing a new race car, based on the M2 Competition it revealed last year.
For all intents and purposes, this new car is the successor of the current M240i Racing.
BMW did not release any technical details yet on the car, saying only it is focused on easy handling, technical quality and maximum safety.
The regular M2 Competition, which was introduced as a replacement for the M2 Coupe, is powered by a much more powerful engine than the N55 used before. In numbers, that means 410 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque, enough to make creating a racing version of it a “logical step” as BMW said.
“With the new entry-level model, based on our BMW M2 Competition, we are showing a strong commitment to Customer Racing in general,” said in a statement Markus Flasch, BMW M president.
“At the same time, we are also starting to establish the BMW M club racing sector. Future BMW M special editions will be particularly relevant in this regard.”
Officially, the new race car will begin shipping in the second quarter of next year. The German carmaker plans an outing on the track as soon as this August though, in the fifth round of the VLN Endurance Championship at the Nürburgring.
Aside from launching a new car, BMW will also create a more comprehensive network for distribution and service, by supporting more motorsport-oriented dealers across the world.
