As you know from the previous story on the XC40, the compact crossover is scheduled to go into production in November at Volvo’s plant in Ghent, Belgium. In advance, the Swedish automaker released the pricing for its smallest crossover, with the XC40 Momentum starting at $35,200 in the USA.
In the United States and Europe, the first trim levels available to configure are the Momentum and R-Design, with European pricing kicking off at €44,450 in Germany. The sporty R-Design is $37,700 and €46,400, respectively. Over in the United Kingdom, the configurator shows only one model: the First Edition.
Available from £38,500 with the D4 turbo diesel (190 PS) and £38,950 with the T5 turbo gas-fed engine (250 PS), the XC40 First Edition comes as standard with all-wheel-drive. AWD is also standard on the U.S. and European models, with the United States being offered only the T5, which develops 248 ponies and 258 lb-ft, and comes with an 8-speed Geartronic automatic tranny.
What do you get for your hard-earned cash? The Momentum is priced high for a compact crossover, but what you get in return is plenty of standard equipment. 18-inch alloy wheels, aluminum roof rails, space-saver spare tire, knee airbag for the driver, LED headlights with Thor’s Hammer DRLs and Active High Beam, SiriusXM, electronic climate control, power driver’s seat with memory function, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, almost everything.
The XC40 Momentum also includes the 12.3-inch instrument cluster, touchscreen infotainment, Comfort Leather Upholstery, Volvo On Call, and a lot of safety and driver assist features. Make no mistake about it, Volvo is eyeing the Range Rover Evoque with the CMA-underpinned XC40 crossover.
Slightly longer the Evoque (4,371 versus 4,425 millimeters), the XC40 also happens to ride on a longer wheelbase (2,702 versus 2,660 millimeters). In the United States, the XC40 gives the Evoque a spanking when it comes to pricing, with the British model retailing from $41,800 before destination tax.
