The Civic Type R is probably bigger in the States than anywhere else in the world. You see, the Europeans at least got to sample Honda's failures, but this is the first such vehicle in America since the Integra Type R went away nearly 20 years ago.
Unlike a Golf R, with which it's constantly being compared, the Type R comes tuned right out of the box, It's got 20-inch wheels, a hood scoop, large air intakes, a chin spoiler, side skirts with red stripes Ferrari-like triple exhaust and a wing the size of a bar table. You'll run out of air mentioning just the big stuff.
It's probably the most over-styled car on the market today, though after seeing the NSX, we're not surprised at all. Having all those fake air intakes and fake carbon bits means that the only thing left to do after you buy the Type R is to get a set of aftermarket wheels.
We've been waiting to see this for quite some time. A couple of people who had the 2018 model drove to the headquarters of Vossen Wheels and demanded they be treated to some upgrades. They were, and we have photos and videos to prove it.
One of them opted for the VFS-10 in a gloss graphite finish that matches the dark paint of the car. Tracing its roots back to the classic ten-spoke styling of the CV1, these Hybrid Forged alloys use flow-forming technology to produce a lighter and stronger barrel.
The white Type R was fitted with the VFS-4 design, described as "the perfect blend between the affordability of a cast wheel and the strength and performance of a forged wheel."
Vossen makes some pretty crazy designs too, but we suspect the owners opted for the Hybrid Forged series because they're going to track days. So which do you think is better, this or the HRE Type R?
