Internally known as G20, the next-gen BMW 3 Series is slated to arrive next year. Before the Bavarian carmaker signs off the G20 for production, the sedan accepted the challenge posed by the Green Hell.
As you can see from the following spy pics, the driver gives the test mule no quarter on the twisty stuff. I wouldn’t have it any other way, though. Honing the chassis is a priority for BMW, a company with a business card that reads “the ultimate driving machine.”
Unfortunately, there’s not much to talk about what’s hiding under the swirly camo. As you can tell, this is an early prototype with mock-up headlights, taillights, front and rear bumpers, as well as no side skirts whatsoever. Nevertheless, I'm confident that the production car will look better than the current 3 Series.
Underneath the skin, the 2018 BMW 3 Series uses something called CLAR. It's the fancy way of saying that this platform is modular, uses carbon fiber reinforced plastic in its construction, and it can be adapted for gas- and diesel-fed engines, as well as plug-in hybrid, pure electric, or fuel cell-powered powertrains.
Whereas the next-generation BMW 1 Series will switch to a front-wheel-drive platform, the G20 will continue the rear-paw tradition that put BMW on the map in the first place. xDrive all-paw-drive will be available as well, albeit not all models will get it. The entry-level models, as in those powered by a 1.5-liter turbo four-banger or a similarly sized turbo diesel, will be exclusively available in RWD form.
These said, expect to see the 2018 BMW 3 Series (G20) make its debut in the latter half of 2017, most likely at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Starting from the calendar year 2019, production of the BMW G20 will be extended to an all-new manufacturing plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, as reported a little while ago.
