During the official presentation of the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster, the three-pointed star also confirmed the advent of a full-on hypercar. But that was then and this is now, which is why it’d best to focus on the ragtop in the adjacent live photos from Paris.
That’s because the GT C Roadster is the best of both worlds. On the one hand, we have a GT adorned with a fabric roof instead. Be that as it may, the GT C Roadster also borrows a handful of go-faster bits and bobs from the track-focused GT R. “Match made in heaven” is a bit of a cliche, but in the case of the GT C Roadster, it is appropriate.
Compared to the GT Roadster and the fixed-head GT S, the all-new GT C Roadster is that little bit more powerful and more capable at going fast around corners. The mad professors in Affalterbach have massaged 549 horsepower (557 PS) and 502 lb-ft (680 Nm) of twist out of a force-fed V8 engine. All that torque is available from 1,900 to 5,750 rpm, translating into great get-up-and-go regardless of gear.
Mated to the Speedshift DCT 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster is able to haul itself from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 3.7 seconds, on to a top speed of 196 mph (315 km/h). On the handling front, the adaptive suspension, limited-slip differential, GT R-like wide rear track, and active rear-axle steering system morph the GT C Roadster into a weapon for carving corners.
This being a roadster, the soft top is the actual highlight that’s worth our attention. If you want to open it, the operation is fully automated and takes 11 seconds of your time. What’s even better, the fabric top can be opened and closed at speeds of up to 30 mph (50 km/h).
Top up or down, the GT C Roadster looks great from most angles. What doesn’t really work that well from a visual standpoint is the chrome strip applied to the rear diffuser. Then again, that’s not a deal-breaker.
