After a lot of waiting since the first spy photographs of the real deal surfaced online, Audi has finally revealed the RS3 Sedan to the public. Described by the German automaker as “the most dynamic model of the A3 series,” the five-cylinder brawler will arrive in the United States next year for the model year 2018.
Animated by a familiar 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbo, the all-new Audi RS3 Sedan boasts 400 PS (395 horsepower) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft). Torque is kept in check by quattro all-wheel-drive. The said system is of the electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutch type, meaning that torque is distributed from front to rear, depending on which axle and wheel need more get-up-and-go. The RS3 Sedan also promises “especially agile driving characteristics.”
Exclusively available with an S tronic 7-speed dual-clutch box, the all-new compact sedan also prides itself on Audi drive select dynamic handling and adjustable exhaust flaps. As standard, the driver has three modes to choose from: dynamic, auto, and comfort. Those who want more thrills are offered an optional add-on: RS sport suspension plus with adaptive damper control.
Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), but Audi has the key to unlocking the full potential of the 2.5 TFSI powerhouse. For God knows how much money, the electronic nanny that governs the car can be subdued to enable a maximum velocity of 280 km/h (174 mph). By comparison, the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 is good for 270 km/h (167 mph) provided that the owner opts for the AMG Driver’s Package. Then again, that’s perfectly OK for a 2.0-liter four-pot mill in the face of a 2.5-liter five-banger powerplant.
Besides the impressive performance, the 2017 Audi RS3 Sedan happens to be a fine-looking machine. RS-specific go-faster bits and bobs complement the beautiful proportions of the sedan body style, but the niceties don’t end here. Inside, the RS3 Sedan features all the goodies you can expect from a car that looks as good as it drives: Qi wireless charging, 4G LTE Internet connectivity, Audi virtual cockpit, 705 watts of banging tunes, the whole nine yards.
