Wolfsburg, the castle of wolves, has just welcomed a newcomer into the pack. We are talking about the all-new Touran MPV, which started rolling off the lines earlier this week and will soon arrive in dealerships across Germany from €23,350.
The first model to come off the lines is pictured above. It's an Oryx White car in the Highline trim level and equipped with a 1.4 TSI BlueMotion engine rated at 150 PS.
The Touran is probably going to be the most accomplished car in the MPV segment. Built on the MQB platform, it is 130 mm (5 inches) longer, 62 kilograms lighter (136 lbs) and 19% more fuel efficient. The design looks similar to that of the Passat, and all the latest technologies are available.
The range of engines available with the new Touran is ample. You can have it with a 2-liter TDI rated at 190 PS, which means this family car has more oomph than a Golf GTD hot hatch. Also available is the 1.8 TSI petrol.
However, most orders will be placed for one of the two entry-level diesels. The familiar 1.6 TDI has been pressed into service with 110 PS and in combination with a DSG gearbox returns an amazing 4.2 l/100km (69 mph UK) fuel consumption. A 150 PS 2.0 TDI diesel will also be fitted to the Touran, the perfect blend of economy and torque. The cheapest models come with a 1.2 TSI making 110 PS and returning a respectable 5.5 l/100 km.
There are only three normal trim levels available on the online configurator, no football-themed Cup editions or Lounge models. Later on, there might be a BlueMotion model with low rolling resistance tires and a specially tuned powertrain.
Unfortunately, not all the engines configurations are in production yet, so you can't get the most powerful ones or order 4Motion all-wheel drive. However, we were still easily able to get our Touran over €35,000.
