Daimler's budget division smart paired up with Renault to create not one but two new city cars, the fortwo and fourfour. They were unveiled only two days ago at an event held in Berlin and already, people are thinking of what else the Renault-smart alliance could deliver.
One possibility would be a reboot of the fortwo cabrio, something that's offered in the outgoing model's range. Now, smart could make such a car in the near future, since it's already been previewed by some of their concepts. However, what the packaging will be like.
The smart fortwo cabriolet is pretty much the smallest open-top car you can buy that doesn't come in a box. The outgoing model has a system that allows you remove the roof pillars and store them in the boot of the car, strapped down into the lid. Technically speaking, it's a more complex layout than what Citroen offers on the DS3 Cabrio, despite the packaging being a lot smaller.
However, their partners at Renault might favor a simpler system where a fabric tarp rolls back without the owner being able to remove the pillars. This is a simpler and cheaper solution, having been already chosen by the Fiat 500c and three new city cars made by Toyota and PSA Peugeot-Citroen.
smart CEO Annette Winkley recently have an interview where she said that the smart brand will not reboot the roadster, instead focusing on maximizing the potential of the fortwo and forfour. Is a fabric roof part of the core of this brand? We'll let you guys deliberate on that one.
