The all-new Mazda Miata is just around the corner, but something about the 2015 model just feels so right. Oh, sure, it's not the sharpest sword ever crafted by the Japanese, but it's still good enough to cut concrete and still perfectly slice a tomato.
Leaving the magic knife references aside for a moment, we have to tell you just how good the NC generation still is, even after all these years. The hydraulic steering is correctly weighted, the gearbox is crisp and at 60 mph, it feels like you're on a circuit, challenging Sterling Moss for the lead.
You might be tempted to think the all-new MX-5 will make the 2015MY feel obsolete, but in reality that's never going to be the case. With a 2-liter 167 hp engine and a 6-speed manual, this car only weighs 2,511 pounds (1,138 kg), so it's as light as a Fiesta.
The only place where the Miata shows its age is in the interior department. There's no navigation or push-button start, even on the top-spec car we tested in Florida. But then again, what's wrong with twisting a key or looking at a map once in a while? If you can find a sweet deal on a new MX-5, go buy it and enjoy driving the paint off it at the track.
This is also the first time in a long while that we think a car can actually exceed its claimed EPA numbers, which is more than we could say about most of the turbocharged affordable performance cars these days. If you'd like to know more and pay the proper respects to the 2015 Mazda MX-5 Miata, check out our review.
