If you're in the market for a brand new mid-size crossover SUV, or CUV for that matter, you might be interested in the all-new Ford Edge. The second generation of the breed is also a case of new technology from the Blue Oval, but the 2.0 EcoBoost engine with a twin-scroll turbo is what we regard as being the most important detail of the whole lot.
Slated to arrive at dealerships this coming spring, the 2015 Ford Edge is constructed on the CD4 platform, which debuted with the 2013 Ford Fusion. The latter model is marketed in Europe as the 2015 Mondeo, a family-oriented model we just reviewed in turbo petrol, diesel and in whisper quiet hybrid format.
Some of you that know your Ford models well might point out the dashboard design of the 2015 Ford Edge and 2013 Fusion / 2015 Mondeo are one and the same, with the instrument cluster borrowed from the Hybrid. You're not wrong. The Mondeo's going to get the same 2.0 EcoBoost inline-four with a twin-scroll turbo by mid-2015, an engine confirmed to churn out 240 PS (237 hp) and 345 Nm (254 lb-ft) of torque.
On the 2015 Ford Edge, this mill comes as standard even on the entry-level SE FWD model ($28,995)
Though it's no longer a secret it will be mated to a six-speed SelectShift automatic gearbox, it's still a mystery how many horsepower it will produce. Ford has previously stated that the 2.0 EcoBoost will produce "an estimated" 245 ponies and 270 lb-ft (366 Nm) of torque, which is not bad at all.
Vector in all-wheel drive and a towing package and you're looking at a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds (1,587 kg) for the new Edge. As opposed to the current 2-liter turbo mill, the new EcoBoost is expected to deliver considerable better performance and low-end torque, as well as better gas mileage.
In addition to the twin-scroll turbo, this engine boasts with a high compression ratio (9.7:1 compared to the current 2.0 EcoBoost's 9.3:1) thanks to new, sturdy pistons. Furthermore, a newly designed integrated exhaust manifold, joined by a high-pressure direct-injection fuel system, an active oil control system and active wastegate are there as well for improved power delivery.
Production of the all-new 2.0 EcoBoost is going to commence in early 2015 at Ford's Cleveland Engine Plant No. 1 from Brook Park, Ohio. As soon as an engine is made, the Blue Oval will ship it to the Oakville plant in Canada, where the 2015 Edge will be made.
