The most feared test in the auto industry comes again and makes another victim, the 2014 Toyota Corolla.
Although the new Corolla got qualified for the 2013 Top Safety Pick award by the other crash tests taken with flying colors, the small overlapping crash test resulted being its weak point.
Readings from different sensors on the dummy indicate that injuries to the left lower leg can occur in a real-world crash like this. Also, the dummy’s head contacted the front airbag but rolled to the left as the steering wheel moved 4 inches (10 cm) to the right during impact. That left the head vulnerable to impact with the A pillar or the left side dashboard surfaces.
It’s pretty hard to make a vehicle that can be both cheap to run, reliable, with an upscale interior, affordable and ultra safe, especially when all that force is concentrated on such a small area. So you’ll have to make a compromise somewhere. So, drive safe and try not to small-overlap anything with your new Corolla.
