Simultaneously with the European rollout of the car across Europe, Mitsubishi Motors USA is also introducing the Mirage. This is quite an interesting car for what it represents, not the way it drives or looks, and we need to take a closer look.
You see, much like Suzuki, Mitsubishi isn't doing that well in North America, and is pinning its future hopes on two cars, the Outlander and the Mirage. Let's see what this cute little five-door is about.
First of all, it's built in Asia, so it's kind of tricky to class. Size-wise, it's between a Fiat 500 and a Ford Fiesta. It measures just 148.8 inches (3,779mm) long, 65.6 inches (1,666mm) wide and 59.1 inches (1,501mm) tall.
Unlike the Fiat 500, it's a budget car, built to be cheep rather than upmarket, so we could very well see it as the next cheapest car you can buy.
Where they have spent plenty of money is one is developing an efficient engine. It's a three-cylinder 1.2-liter unit with variable valve-timing, start-stop and reduced friction internals. It only makes 74 hp and 74 lb-ft of torque in US trim.
The standard car will have a manual, but the CVT is the one designed to impress. Equipped with it, the Mirage will supposedly return fuel economy of 40 mpg combined, 37 mpg city and 44 mpg highway.
The car will be available this fall, with prices to be annoucned at a later date.
