Chevrolet has just announced the all-new seven-generation C7 Corvette will make its official debut on January 13th, 2013. The brand new sportscar will be a revolution in terms of design and will be shown in Detroit.
The new sportscar is expected to have a downsized engine, reduced in capacity from to 5.5-liters in an effort to make the car more efficient. We really don’t know if the old motor really has been made redundant, but there should be some new lightweight materials being used to shave some pounds wherever possible.
The current generation C6 that will become outdated entered production in 2005 with a 6-liter LS2 V8 producing 400 hp and 400 lb-ft (542 Nm) of torque. For the 2008 model year, the Corvette received the new LS3 engine, which is a 6.2-liter unit and has 436 hp and 428 lb-ft (580 Nm) of torque.
We can expect the base C7 to at least match the Z06, a 2006 model year with a 7.0-liter version of the small-block V8, which made it 505 hp of pure fun. The Z06 also had an aluminum frame that made it lighter.
However, the daddy of all Corvettes, the ZR1, will probably stay king for a bit longer, with it supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 motor producing 638 hp.
