The brand new 4 Series is still a rather new appearance in the segment and people are still trying to figure out if it’s worth the praise it’s been receiving lately.
The guys from Autos.ca took the range topping model out for a spin. In case you’re not really that much into the new 4 Series, the best of the offering right now is the 435i xDrive model. It comes with plenty of standard kit and a 3-liter turbocharged engine that makes 306 HP and 400 Nm (300 lb-ft) of torque. Power is sent to all four corners of the car through the xDrive system.
The best thing about this car though, proved to be the manual gearbox. If you want a sporty luxury coupe of this size, you really should go for the manual, in any car you’d pick. However, right now, you’d be kind-of short for options as the only other car out there that has a manual on the options list is the S5. At least over in the BMW side both the auto and manual options are free of charge.
On the road, the 435i does feel a lot more stable than the 3 Series and a lot more capable. The front end is more responsive while the lower center of gravity means you can lean into corners even faster than you’re used to.
Overall, the 4 Series is not just a marketing scheme for the unaware. The 4er is truly different from the 3 Series and you can feel it everywhere, not just when you’re paying for it.
