Audi might have used the same modular platform as Volkswagen to make the A3 cheaper to build, but that won't help them that much in Australia, where import taxes are huge.
Audi Australia might have wittingly started an aggressive pricing war with Mercedes' new A-Class.
To make the all-new 2013 Audi A3 competitive enough against the Mercedes A-Class, the base model has been priced about AUD5,000 lower, at just AUD35,600.
The base Audi A3 for Australia will be powered by a 1.4-liter TFSI that will generate 122 hp and it will be available with a dual-clutch automatic transmission. Though full pricing won't be revealed for a couple more months, they has announced that three other engines will be available: the 1.8-liter TFSI with 180 hp (132 kw), as well as two diesel models, the 1.6 TDI with 105 hp (77 kW) and the 150 hp (110 kW) 2.0-liter TDI. Towards the end of the year, the latest generation 1.4 TFSI with cylinder deactivation and 140 hp will also be launched.
