2010 Kia Sorento R Engine Detailed

Prior to the official unveiling for the European market at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show this autumn, Korean manufacturer Kia has released details of their star engine for the Sorento line-up, the so-called R unit.

The R engine, which will be available in two versions (a 2.0l and a 2.2l) has been developed, according to kia-buzz.com, to become the world's best high-powered eco-friendly diesel engine in its segment.

Taken separately, the 2.2l version develops 145 kW (194 hp) and 436 Nm of torque, with its smaller counterpart developing 135 kW (181 hp) and 392 Nm of torque, making it "class leaders in comparison to similar offering from Toyota, Mercedes Benz, BMW and Volkswagen."

The engine's highlights are the 1800 bar common rail piezo-electric fuel injection system, the turbocharger system and the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) control system.

The stiffness of the engine was reinforced, while the replacement of conventional materials with plastic in some parts of the engine will help it provide improved end-life recyclability.

The four-cylinder R engine will play an important role in the future of Kia vehicles. The aim is, as for all manufacturers, to bring harmful emissions, as well as fuel consumption, to as lower levels as possible. This without sacrificing the power of the powerplants. In R's case, the fuel consumption rates at about 10 percent less than in the previous generation of the Sorento.

Kia plans to implement the R engine on both low fuel consumption vehicles and premium versions as well. Of course, further developments are to be expected, whether in the form of alterations made to the R or in the shape of new engines altogether.
