Pontiac's Trans Am was already the number one model in the Firebird lineup in 1978, but the new release pushed the nameplate to a new all-time high.
The GM brand produced 93,341 Trans Ams in 1978, nearly three times more units than the base Firebird (32,672 units). The Espir was still the runner-up from a production perspective with 36,926 units, with the Formula the least appealing to customers. It accounted for 24,346 cars produced in 1978.

Most Trans Ams produced in 1978 – 80,676 units – left the factory with an automatic transmission, so only 12,665 cars used a manual gearbox.

The Trans Am in these photos spent its entire life with the same owner, recently landing online with a strong desire to find a new owner and get a complete restoration.

eBay seller mopar6930 says the car was owned by an elderly lady and had been sleeping in California since it was new.

The photos speak for themselves and confirm that the car comes in good shape. The floors look better than expected, and I admit I'm surprised the rust hasn't yet produced major damage. The Trans Am was never restored, so it didn't receive undercarriage work. The floor pans should be the original ones, and given their shape, it's clear grandma took proper care of this Trans Am.

The original interior shows its age, with the seats exhibiting tears and the center console revealing several cracks. However, if you want to see the glass half-full, it's worth reminding that everything is there, so the cabin is complete.

The engine under the hood is the 6.6-liter V8 paired with an automatic transmission. It's the original unit that came with the car, and the good news is that it starts and runs correctly. The paint already received a refresh 25 years ago when someone sprayed a new coat of paint, so it now looks pretty good – albeit collectors or a buyer specifically interested in a perfect 10 Trans Am might feel the need for another respray.

This Trans Am is in hot demand these days, as the car landed on eBay earlier this week and is already the subject of a fierce digital battle. The vehicle received 35 bids in only a few days online, with the top offer reaching $8,000 a few minutes ago. However, the owner also configured a reserve, and it's still in place today. This means the Trans Am won't go anywhere until someone sends a bigger offer, though considering the solid interest in the car, I expect the reserve to be triggered in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the Trans Am still sleeps in Las Vegas, and you'll probably need a trailer to take it home if you don't live close to this location.
