The short-lived Fairmont saw daylight in 1978 with a 140 four-cylinder engine as the standard offering. It was a lazy mill that perfectly highlighted Fairmont's economic focus, producing only 88 horsepower in the first years on the market (before getting upgraded to 90 horsepower).
However, Ford also offered more "potent" engines (you'll understand why I used the quotes when you read the next words), including a straight-six with 85 horsepower (upgraded to 91 horsepower when the 1980 model year came out).

The Windsor V8 was the icing on the cake. With a displacement of 302 cubic inches on the 1978 and 1979 Fairmont, the V8 produced 139 horsepower at 3,600 rpm.

This "almighty" engine was installed on the Fairmont you see in these pictures, with the car retaining the original mill 46 years after rolling off the assembly lines.

The car checks all the right boxes for a restoration candidate, albeit the project wouldn't require substantial work. eBay seller 369joepd says the Fairmont was pulled from a barn and purchased two years ago from Iowa, but they don't share more specifics on how long the car spent in storage. However, it doesn't suffer from major rust issues, and most damage is only on the metal surface.

The vehicle is a survivor, meaning it has never been altered since leaving the factory. The engine is still original and starts, runs, and drives. It requires some attention because it leaks oil, but a good mechanic should be able to decrypt more information with a quick inspection under the hood.

The paint is original but shows its age, with chips, scratches, and cracking requiring urgent attention if you want a Fairmont in tip-top shape. However, the body looks straight and solid, albeit the in-person inspection would help any potential buyer check these details thoroughly before committing to a purchase.

Bringing this Fairmont back to the road doesn't seem to be a difficult job, and the vehicle leaves the door open to a million possibilities, including creating a restomod, a custom build, or turning it into a daily driver with minor fixes.

The mileage raises some questions, showing 40,734 miles, but the seller admits they're not sure it's the original figure, as "there are only five digits."

The bidding starts at $5,000, and the WWW believes this is an ambitious expectation, considering that the 1978 Fairmont has never been a highly desirable car. However, a single bid is all it takes for this Fairmont to find a new home, as the owner posted it online without a reserve. The highest bidder will take it home.

Meanwhile, this Fairmont is waiting for the end of the auction in Brewster, Massachusetts, and considering the engine problems, transportation will be needed.
