Not long ago, CNN included a special variant of the 1957 Chevrolet Corvette on its list of rarest sports cars in the world. That variant is the Fuelie, the first incarnation of the vehicle to be offered with fuel injection for the small-block V8.
Needless to say, fuel-injection was still an experiment back then. Also, the Corvette is not exactly a car for the masses, and these two elements combined to make this version of the Vette one of the rarest cars out there. After all, under 1,000 of them were made that first year, and probably even fewer have made it in top notch condition to our time.

The Fuelie in the gallery above is one of those who made it. It is one of the about 700 to have been built with the said fuel-injected engine and a four-speed manual transmission, and for a considerable period of time (15 years) it has been part of a larger car collection somewhere in Houston, Texas.

That means not many mortals got the chance to rest their eyes on this car. Fully restored back in the 1990s, and then again with some work done on the Rochester fuel-injection system in the first few months of this year, it is certainly one of the finest examples of the breed we’ve ever seen.

The paint on the car is the correct one, Venetian Red, only reapplied during the restoration, and it stands over an equally red interior.

Under the hood, the stock 283ci (4.6-liters) V8 is still there, linked to the said transmission and developing 283 horsepower. In the six decades that have passed since the car rolled off the production lines, it was in use for just 53,000 miles (85,000 km).

The 1957 Chevy Corvette Fuelie was for sale on Bring a Trailer until this week. It went to an unknown buyer for $82,000.
