BMW’s new 1-Series is already a familiar sight, but there’s no denying it will be a key piece of the marketing and sales puzzle for the Bavarians. Our first impressions are that they’ve dealt with some of the major drawbacks from the old days.
First off, the styling is much better, and the car looks wider and more luxurious thanks to some 5-Seris features. The room inside is better, especially in the trunk, but mixing hatches and rear-wheel drive will always leave you cramped.
Frankfurt has seen the arrival of the new 1er in its 118d and 118i forms. The former offers a 2.0-liter diesel four-pot with 143 hp from 4,000 rpm and 320 Nm of torque. The standard sprint takes 8.9 seconds and the top speed is 212 km/h r 132 mph. Impressive, when you add the 4.4 liters of fuel this burns.
As for the 118i, this is the most powerful petrol at the moment, having 170 hp from a 1.6-liter unit with TwinPower Turbo and direct injection technology.
