In 1993, the Japan-based motorcycle maker launched the Honda XR 650L, a street/trail motorcycle more similar to the XR 600R than the XR 650R. It was part of the XR series, which comprised many models with different engine displacements and designations.

It was powered by a 644cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine, first seen in the 1988 NX650 Dominator, making it the longest-produced RFVC engine by the Japanese maker. In addition, the Honda XR 650L was one of the longest-production models in motorcycling's history.

In 2003, the renowned Japanese moto manufacturer released the Honda XR650L, a dual-sports machine that debuted in 1993. It combined the NX650 Dominator's engine with the XR600R's light, off-road capable chassis.

Over its production period, the bike remained unchanged, packing features, such as a high-mounted front fender, a small headlight integrated into a small cowl, an engine plate, a single seat with a toolbox, a high-mounted exhaust muffler, and wire-spoke wheels shod with off-road tires.

In the performance department, the 2003 Honda XR650L's soul was brought to life by a 644cc four-stroke single-cylinder air-cooled engine that delivered an output power of 41 hp with a peak force at 6,000 rpm and 52 Nm (38 lb-ft) torque at 4,000 rpm.

Two 240 mm brake discs, one front and one rear, kept the bike safe. The front disc was clamped by a twin-piston caliper, and the rear was tied to a single-piston caliper.
