After over a year of photos depicting one of the most peculiar mules in recent years, our spy photographers have finally caught a production version of the upcoming smart fortwo.
Even though it's still heavily camouflaged in a psychedelic pattern, all the production body panels are on the car so the overall shape can be seen easily.
Sporting a much more upright front thanks to upcoming pedestrian regulations and an overall boxier look, the third generation of the smart fortwo will retain its two-seat layout and rear-wheel drive while the exterior size will increase slightly.
Engines will again be fitted in the rear, right under the luggage compartment, with the three-cylinder gasoline mills being modified versions of Renault's TCe 0.9-liter in both turbocharged and naturally-aspirated form – quite fitting since the entire car is made in collaboration with the French manufacturer.
It is speculated that the fuel-sipping three-cylinder cdi engine will not make a return in the new fortwo, with the all-electric version taking its place in the new engine lineup. An elongated version of its platform will be used by the smart forfour replacement, which will arrive about six months after the new fortwo gets launched at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.
