Hyundai had relentlessly worked around the clock to provide a better version of the seventh generation of its mid-size sedan Sonata for U.S. customers.

The Korean automaker worked around the clock to create an even better version of the seventh generation of the Sonata. There were several areas where it managed to overtake some of its key competitors, such as the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord, in the U.S. market. Even though the car was just three years old since the model’s introduction at the 2014 New York Auto Show, there were some areas where the automaker considered that it might improve things, which applied to the exterior, interior, and drivetrain. Furthermore, it listened carefully to its customers to provide them with a better driving experience and even improved the car’s dynamics for those who didn’t want just another bland family sedan.

Hyundai improved the “fluidic sculpture 2.0” design language of the 2018 Sonata with the introduction of a new cascading grille. This had a diamond shape and featured a mesh pattern that tried to create a 3D effect, and the brand’s badge was sported in the middle. The automaker also added the option for LED headlights, a massive improvement over the previously used HID headlamps. Lower, on the apron, the automaker decorated the side scoops with fresh LED daytime running lights.

Like most other facelifted vehicles, there were no significant changes to the car’s profile. It still had the same fastback look even though it was a three-box sedan. Hyundai offered the 2018 Sonata with different wheels, depending on the grade. The lowest ones, the SE and the Eco, featured 16-inch alloys, while upper grades received 17- or 18-inch ones. Regardless of the grade, all versions came fitted with heated door mirrors that also integrated LED turn signals. However, one signature design element didn’t change: the chromed stripe that started from the headlights and ran along the bodywork up to the C-pillars.

Inside, all versions were fitted with an instrument panel where a 4.2-inch color TFT display took center stage. The large dials of the tachometer and speedometer flanked it, and they also integrated the water temperature and the fuel level gauges, respectively. Along with the refreshed seventh generation of the Sonata, Hyundai also introduced the option for an eight-inch touchscreen featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This was one of the most significant changes to the Sonata range. The center stack also sported the redesigned HVAC and stereo buttons. At the back, the automaker installed a comfortable bench seat fit for three adults. The headroom was not something to write home about, but besides that, it was an excellent vehicle for a family of four with grown-up kids.

Under the hood, there were no significant surprises in terms of engines. Hyundai installed a choice of powerplants and paired them with a six-speed automatic as standard, depending on the model. The most potent version, powered by a two-liter turbocharged unit, was mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
