Maybe the release of a new SUV on the Chinese market wouldn’t had gotten that much attention if it wasn’t under the name of Borgward.

If the brand’s name doesn’t tell you much, Borgward was a historical German producer that used to build elegant sedans and coupes.

It was in 1961 went Borgward went bankrupt and in 2015 when its name was revived under Chinese ownership.

The BX7’s exterior design was criticized since the SUV’s release. Some said that it looked pretty much like the Audi Q5, but with a distinctive grille and different headlights. Others have said that it was dull, with too big headlights and a way too tall waistline.

It’s true that besides and grille and the headlights, everything else looked common. It should have come as no surprise that the BX7’s design looked German, as the car was developed by German engineers with Chinese money.

Under the skin, the BX7 was more Chinese than German. The SUV was based on the Senova x65, a Chinese SUV with a platform derived from SAAB 9-3.

The new Chinese-German SUV was available in two trim levels: BX7 28T and the top BX7 TS. The BX7 TS featured a different grille pattern, bigger wheels, roof rails, a premium interior, and a sportier exterior design.

Both models were powered by a 2.-0-liter unit that developed 225 hp. The power was delivered to all four wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Offering seating for 7, the BX7 was also a practical vehicle with two easy to unfold rear seats in the trunk.
