Audi replaced the fifth generation of the A4 with a new lineup named the A5, and that confused the brand’s fans even more since, previously, this nameplate wasn’t installed on a sedan or a station wagon.

The German automaker decided to change the naming system of its cars. As a result, it gave the odd numbers to vehicles fitted with an internal combustion engine and the even numbers to EVs. So, in 2025, the A5 became the next chapter of the A4. The new model was built on a fresh platform named PPC, or Premium Platform Combustion, and at the time of its launch, it was available as a sedan and a station wagon. The latter was traditionally called the Avant, while the former was not exactly a sedan. It was a five-door hatchback with a Sedan moniker, so it mixed what the former A5 Sportback and the A4 Sedan offered. It was a surprising move for the four-ring automaker.

For over a decade, Audi has had a specific design element on its cars, called the singleframe grille. With the 2025 A5 Sedan, that distinct part of the vehicle was altered. Instead of being tall, it was shorter, albeit broad. The new matrix LED headlights developed by the automaker boasted an upper section that customers could personalize, while the lower area was for the high and low beams. Audi created a wrapped-around plastic bumper that sported an apron fitted with a broad air intake and a pair of side scoops for the air curtain.

From its profile, the 2025 Audi A5 Sedan didn’t look exactly like a three-box vehicle since it was a hatchback. The long and curved roofline was sloped down towards the back of the vehicle, and the automaker installed a third triangular window behind the C-pillars to increase the rear three-quarter visibility. Along with the new model, Audi ditched the previously used grab handles and adopted flush ones. At the back, the automaker offered LED or OLED taillights underlined by cascading turn signal lamps. Between them, a red light stripe crossed the tailgate, making the car look wider. On the lower side, under the bumper, the automaker placed one or two real exhausts, depending on the engine.

Audi created a comfortable and luxurious place for its customers inside the cabin, depending on the options. Base trim levels sported fabric upholstery that covered the door cards and the seats, while upper grades were leather-wrapped. On the dashboard, in a free-floating position, the automaker put a curved display showing the instrument panel in front of the driver and the touchscreen for the infotainment system atop the center stack. In addition, a 10.9-inch touchscreen was available for the side passenger, so they can choose music, play games, or watch videos without distracting the driver. In the back, the 40/20/40 split-folding bench seat could accommodate three adult-sized passengers, although with limited headroom due to the sloped roofline. Legroom, on the other hand, was adequate thanks to the longer wheelbase than the previous generation of the A4 (the B9 model).

At the time of launch, Audi announced a range of three engines for the 2025 A5 Sedan. Customers could get the vehicle with a two-liter turbo diesel or two versions of a two-liter gasoline unit. The oil-burner engine was a mild hybrid, which helped the automaker lower emissions for that powerplant. The standard transmission across the range was an automatic gearbox that sent the power to the front or all corners, depending on the version.
