There were rumors the Golf Variant won’t soldier on for the eighth generation of Volkswagen’s best-selling model. While that might be nothing but hearsay, chances are the Golf Sportsvan will be dropped over sluggish sales.
Speaking to British motoring publication Autocar, the sales and marketing boss of Volkswagen said that “cars like that will shift out of our portfolio.” The shape and size of the ID.3 more than make up for such a change in the Golf lineup, and in the long run, Jürgen Stackmann made it clear that Volkswagen is looking to simplify the Golf family with “fewer engines and trims.”

Presented as a concept towards the end of 2013, the Sportsvan then entered production in February 2014 at the Wolfsburg plant in Germany. More or less a replacement for the MPV-inspired Golf Plus from the previous generation, the Golf Sportsvan received the R-Line package in 2015 before the mid-cycle refresh was presented at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Multi-purpose vehicles are falling out of favor with the European public, and this shift in demand to the detriment of the Golf Sportsvan has seen the Tiguan level up to the next level. With sales halving from 103,905 units in 2015 to 53,532 in 2018, does it come as a surprise the SV has to go?

In Germany, pricing for the Sportsvan starts at 22,900 euros as opposed to 22,460 for the Golf Variant. The difference is much smaller in the United Kingdom, but all in all, you’re better off choosing the station wagon over the MPV if you’re looking for a family car as well as a weekend warrior.

16-inch wheels and a six-speed manual transmission come standard, along with the 1.0 TSI OPF engine and 115 PS on tap, Composition infotainment system, climate control, and LED daytime running lights. Pricing can exceed 30,000 euros with the appropriate options ticked off the list, including all-wheel drive, a turbo diesel, and a dual-clutch transmission.
