How’s this for a giant stroke of good luck? Two pensioners managed to cheat death after they were hit by a driverless car and a garage door, walking away with only minor injuries.
It’s true, the accident happened while they were walking hand in hand on the pavement, so they got hit with a hefty dose of bad luck before they were lucky, but still. The incident was captured on CCTV cameras and is available at the bottom of the page.
The Daily Mail says that it happened over the weekend, in Paraiba do Sul, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The elderly couple were out for a walk, when the driverless car was catapulted into the street and, with it, the door of the garage.
The woman is the first one to get up and try to lift the 155lb door off her husband. A passer-by comes to her rescue and pushes the car off the man, who became trapped under the rear wheels. More people gather and the owner of the car also comes rushing. Keys in hand, he jumps inside the car and moves it forward a bit, just to free the elderly man pinned underneath it.
According to the same media outlet, both pensioners received only cuts and bruises in the accident, and the man also suffered a minor neck injury. They were examined at a local hospital and let go, but the police is investigating the accident.
“The shaken car owner claimed he had just arrived home from the supermarket and was taking the groceries into his house when the accident happened,” the Mail writes. “He said he heard a loud bang and a crashing noise outside the property and ran to help the victims when he realized what had occurred.”
The driver says he recalls applying the hand brake before getting out of the car and can’t account for the accident. The police are now looking to see if the car started moving on its own by some mechanical error or if it was the owner’s fault before pressing charges.
