BMW could join Hyundai and Toyota to become one of the first manufacturers to sell production hydrogen-powered vehicles in the future, company chairman Dr. Norbert Reithofer revealed earlier this month.
Speaking during a conference hall, Reithofer said the German automaker is “looking into solutions such as fuel cell-powered electric motors” that could offer “short refuelling times and enable long distance travel with zero emissions”.
“Our development work on future drive systems is guided by a clear maxim: intelligent spectrum. The same is true of our path towards zero emissions mobility: For urban areas, we have the electric BMW i3. For slightly longer distances we have our plug-in hybrids – such as the BMW i8. And for long distances we are looking into solutions such as fuel-cell-powered electric motors,” Reithofer said.
The representative declined any details, but added that “we believe purpose-built vehicle architecture is the right approach for a series vehicle in the future.”
