BMW definitely created some anxiety among its more traditional fan base after it revealed the 4 Series G22 and its enormous kidney grille, to be more specific.
Some people saw the model as a sign of things to come, but it looks like BMW has other plans for the future of its emblematic kidney grille, and it will all depend on the model series it adorns.

The latest generation of the BMW X6 also features a larger-than-life grille, albeit not as large as the 4 Series, although its grille’s most obvious visual trickery is not based on size but light.

Mostly impressive at night, the optional LED-illuminated grille of the X6 is currently unique in the automotive industry, but it might get a sidekick once the mid-cycle facelift for its smaller X4 brother goes official later this year.

A little over a month ago, we got the chance to take a look at a pre-production version of the refreshed 2022 BMW X4 M, but now it’s time to check out a mildly camouflaged prototype of the regular X4 LCI.

LCI, as most BMW fans already know, stands for LCI (Life Cycle Impulse), which is a fancier way of saying that we’re still talking about the same car but with a major refresh on most of the visible and invisible components.

According to unofficial sources, the X6’s baby brother will also get a version of the LED-augmented grille, which has considerably increased its size, as you can see in the attached spy photos.

The interior will also get a major revamp, with an updated version of the iDrive 7 infotainment system and a fully digital driver’s display doing their best at improving the atmosphere.

On the powertrain side, we can expect the number of mild-hybrid engines to increase, with a variety of inline-four and inline-six gasoline and diesel mills to provide slightly more power and a serious upgrade in fuel economy over the current X4.

Set to be unveiled either at the same time or soon after the facelifted X3 in the second half of 2021, the BMW X4 LCI wants to increase its market share while the next-generation Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is still being cooked.
