As you've probably noticed, the second generation of the Tiguan has finally allowed the compact VW Crossover to blossom. And since the Tiguan is a big boy now, it's time for the R incarnation to show up.
No, we're not talking about the R-Line bodykit. Instead, we're here to give you the full enchilada, namely the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan R. You can think of this as the SUV version of Volkswagen's hottest hatch.
Our spy shooters have managed to capture the prototype you see here on the outskirts of the Nurburgring, with the test car doing absolutely nothing to hide its Golf R muscle - the photos reported that the soundtrack of the thing meant there was no doubt about what lies under the hood.
Let's not get ahead of ourselves, though, as we still need to wait and see the exact output numbers for this model. To be more precise, we're expecting the German engineers to give the two-liter turbo a slight power bump compared to the 300 hp the unit currently delivers when animating the range-topping Golf.
We're expecting an output of at least 310 hp and a peak torque of 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). And while those figures might not sound like all that much in the world of SUVs, there are two things we need to keep in mind.
First of all, the power will be harnessed with the help of an uber-sharp DSG dual-clutch transmission, which will send it to all four wheels.
Secondly, the Tiguar R should tip the scales at under 3,500 lbs (1.7 tons), delivering a respectable power-to-weight ratio. As a result, the 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint should be covered in 5.5 seconds or less, while the top speed will be electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h).
Expect the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan R to bow in the first half of next year - you'd better find the piggy bank quickly.
