Without a shadow of a doubt and even to the untrained eye, the Giulietta is not on par with its direct rivals in the compact hatchback segment. Referred to as the Tipo 940, underpinned by a 6-year-old FWD platform shared with a handful of Fiat-Chrysler models, and not available in the United States, the Giulietta is nearing its demise. The replacement model, slated to be presented in 2018 or thereabout, could up the ante with rear-wheel-drive.
At the present moment, no one caught a test mule of the thing on camera. Neither Alfa Romeo said anything relevant about its upcoming offensive in the compact segment. Yet from Alfa’s perspective, there is only one way to go forward. And that’s to “return to [the] legacy of the brand with [an] all-new RWD / AWD architecture and powertrains.” Reading between the lines, the Giorgio platform from the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV will be adapted for Alfa Romeo’s entire future lineup, from the compact-sized Giulietta upward.
Thinking about it, a RWD hatchback is the right way to replace the Giulietta, chiefly because BMW is said to embrace FWD for the next generation of the 1 Series. Thus, the 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulietta successor has the makings of the only rear-wheel-drive hatchback in the compact segment. Could you imagine it in Quadrifoglio specification, roaring twin-turbo V6, manual tranny and all?
And so, pixel wizard Theophilus Chin decided to render the Giulietta’s stand-in as a squashed interpretation of the Stelvio. I’m not exactly sure if Alfa Romeo will apply the Matryoshka nesting dolls treatment to the hatchback’s exterior design, but then again, everything is possible. I, for example, hope that the upcoming model will look significantly different from the all-new Stelvio.
Before the 2018 Alfa Romeo compact hatchback makes it debut, however, hearsay suggests that the Giulia wagon and a mid-size sedan called dibs. The latter is internally referred to as Tipo 961 and it is believed to come to market as the Alfetta. In addition to these three models, the Italian manufacturer has yet another compact-sized vehicle in the offing (i.e. Tipo 962 C-SUV) and two sports cars, presently known as the Tipo 963 Spider and Tipo 963 Coupe.
