Mostly known for playing the hero role in the “Bullit” and “Le Mans” movies, and his endurance racing career, Steve McQueen also owned more than just a couple of unique vehicles.
Among the Porsches, Jaguars and Ferraris, the Indiana-born actor and driver also possessed the first factory built Baja 1000 Chevrolet pickup truck. Developed on a Chevy C10 chassis with a C30 one-ton cab and designed by Vic Hickey, the race truck debuted in 1968 and was sold to McQueen in 1970. He kept the vehicle until 1972, when it was purchased by a Hickey employee.
Set to be auction at the upcoming Mecum Auction in Santa Monica (July 26-27), the Baja truck has only 14,000 miles on its odometer and still wears its original red paint. In addition, the pickup that was driven by racing legends Cliff Coleman, Bud Ekins, Johhny Dias, Mickey Thompson and Chuck Coye has a period correct small block 350 and sponsor decals, reconstructed fuel tanks and original Vic Hickey-built roll cage.
“This historically significant pickup was once owned by actor Steve McQueen and brought to life by designer and motoring visionary Vic Hickey, who helped create important vehicles such as the Chevrolet Blazer, the Humvee, the Lunar Rover and the legendary Baja Boot. This 1969 off-road race truck was a continuation of Hickey’s design prowess. It has a C10 chassis with a C30 one-ton cab. The vehicle made its debut in the inaugural Baja 1000 in 1968.” - Mecum Auctions
