American manufacturer Ford' flagship... pickup truck, the F-150 line, is now complete when it comes to the range of engines offered to go with the Built Tough truck. Ford announced yesterday the F-150 range now comprises four new engines and, as a premiere for the US market, a six-speed automatic transmission for the entire lineup.
The four new engines are the 3.7l V6 (300 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 275 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm), the 5.0l V8 (360 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 380 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,250 rpm) the 6.2l V8 (411 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 434 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm) and the twin-turbocharged EcoBoost 3.5l.
Promising to be at least 20 percent more fuel efficient than the 2010 F-150 lineup, the new pickup line will be at first available only with the 3.7l V6 and a 5.0l V8 units. Perhaps the most anticipated unit, the EcoBoost 3.5l, will offer a power equivalent to a V8 unit, while consuming some 20 percent less fuel than the 2010 F-150 5.4l V8.
“Our new engine lineup allows greater flexibility for customers to select the powertrain choice that best suits their needs,” said Barb Samardzich, Ford vice president of Powertrain Engineering.
“We are in the midst of a powertrain revolution, with 30 new powertrains over the next two years, and our loyal F-150 customers are the next ones to benefit.”
As for the six-speed automatic transmission (6R80), it comes equipped with SelectShift Automatic, a feature which automatically shifts and also allows complete manual control. The unit features a tow/haul mode, recalibrated to provide better control when hauling a heavy load or towing a trailer, while on down grades.
“With the 3.7-liter engine, for example, that particular transmission has fewer clutch plates compared with the other engines. Everything is sized accordingly for optimum driveability, performance and fuel economy,” added Bryant Grytzelius, 6R80 transmission engineering manager.
