We’re still among the few people who like large coupes made from sedans - we’ve even bought the Laguna Coupe after we’ve tested it. We like such cars even more when they’ve been sprinkled with go-faster bits and come with the best, most uncompromising styling.
A coupe based on the new Mazda6 strikes us as a thing of beauty. After all, the Takeri concept that preceded the flagship Mazda model impressed us to no end. These renderings created by Theophilus Chin show an even more styling back end with flowing lines.
Mazda has also been way too preoccupied with how efficient their cars have been. SKYACTIV technologies are promising, but we’d like to see them making a comeback to the MPS (MazdaSpeed) game.
All-wheel drive and a powerful turbo engine are a must for such a car!
The bad news is that large two-door coupes just aren't in demand these days, at least when non-premium automakers are involved. Renault is killing off the Laguna Coupe, while Peugeot's cute 407 never had a successor.
On the premium side of the pond, things aren't quite so bad. Mercedes has invested billions into the W222 S-Class range, which now includes a coupe and the first convertible in several decades. V8 engines come standard with twin turbochargers, while even V12s area available.
BMW on the other hand took the 3 Series Coupe/Convertible and made it a standalone series called the 4 Series.
Mazda undoubtedly makes some of the most enjoyable vehicles in all the segments it targets. However, the relatively small automaker doesn't have enough money to develop every model it wants and models like the Mazda5 minivan or CX-7 crossover have been discontinued.
For the ultimate 2-door thrills in a Mazda, your one and only choice is the ND Miata, a featherweight roadster with a heart of gold.
